KWMC is located on Block 2 of the Haldimand Tract—six miles on either side of the Grand River—on the traditional lands of the Chonnonton, Anishinaabe, and Haudenosaunee peoples.
First Nations, Metis and Inuit cultures, histories and stories are rich and vibrant. Indigenous world views and practices have been disrupted through colonialism, genocide, and forced assimilation. We acknowledge the lasting impacts of colonialism, genocide and assimilation on Indigenous Peoples and the continued benefits settlers derive from these systems.
As we support newcomer settlement, KWMC offers Truth & Reconciliation programming where immigrants and refugees can learn, reflect, and engage with Indigenous histories and ongoing struggles. In working toward a more welcoming community, our team actively engages in reconciliation and decolonization training. We listen, learn, and collaborate with Indigenous partners, elders, and community members to foster open dialogue and take action within the settlement sector.

In 1967, a determined group of newcomers to Canada formed the K-W Folk Arts Council and organized the very first Multicultural Festival in Kitchener-Waterloo. Over time, the mandate of that organization expanded to providing support and assistance to newcomers to our community and then later to provide interpretation and translation services to public and private sector clients in the community.
Today, the Centre provides a wide range of services to thousands of clients throughout Waterloo Region (and beyond) …and still hosts one of the biggest Multicultural Festivals in Canada every year.
As a non-profit, registered charity, we are grateful for the support of our many funders.
The Centre is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors elected from and by our general membership.
